Recently in Canadian lumber news, it was announced that Vancouver, British Columbia-based Western Forest Products Inc. will purchase its first U.S. lumber processing and distribution center for a reported $9 million. According to news reports, the lumber producer will close the deal in January of 2018.
Don Demens, Western President and CEO, said that the purchase of Hampton Lumber Mills-Washington Inc. in Arlington, WA will assist in helping to make softwood duties imposed by the U.S. on products sold into the United States less severe. Demens said acquiring the Washington State timber company helps strengthen Canada’s competitiveness on a global level by positioning Western Forest Products to mitigate the detrimental impact of duties on the country’s products destined for the U.S. market.
According to Demens, buying Hampton Lumber Mills-Washington will make it possible to increase production of targeted, finished products while at the same time making the company more effective in servicing select U.S. customers via a centralized distribution center and warehouse. Another benefit of the acquisition is that Western will be able to produce finished products it hasn’t produced in the past, according to a spokeswoman for the company.
Western Forest Products Inc. is the largest lumber producer and woodland operator in coastal British Columbia and is an integrated Canadian forest products company.
